Peter Kauma is a Partner at K&K Advocates and leads the firm's Litigation Team, which has grown substantially in reach and reputation under his direction. He is recognised for his ability to deliver commercially intelligent, strategically sound solutions to complex and high-stakes disputes, bringing the same rigour to contentious matters that he applies to the transactional dimensions of his practice.
Peter's practice spans commercial litigation, arbitration, energy, banking and finance, taxation, and corporate and commercial advisory. He advises multinational corporations, local companies, public entities, financial institutions on contentious matters, regulatory compliance, and international arbitration proceedings involving state and quasi-state entities. He has expertise in international arbitration, with a strong focus on investor-state and state-related disputes, having acted as counsel under the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) and the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA).
Peter has advised on high-value and strategically significant matters across Uganda's energy and infrastructure sectors, representing clients in major domestic and cross-border transactions. His work includes petroleum supply arrangements, refinery and pipeline development projects, mining and carbon framework agreements and aviation infrastructure. He is regularly instructed on complex project development matters where the careful alignment of state and investor interests is central to achieving workable, durable outcomes.
Peter is an active researcher on the oil and gas sector and has written papers (unpublished) on health and safety regulation, expropriation risk, production sharing agreements, energy dispute resolution, arbitrator independence, e-arbitration, refinery development in Africa, the impact of COVID-19 on the oil and gas value chain, and petroleum tax dispute resolution in Uganda.
